CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – People looking for seasonal work should be careful of work that seems fun, but is actually naughty.
The Better Business Bureau’s 2023 Scam Tracker Report ranks employment fraud second in risk level.
Data shows that reports of these types of scams have increased by more than 50 percent from the previous year.
The average amount of money people lost to them is $2,000.
BBB regional director Sydney Waters said a contributing factor has been the increase in the number of people working remotely since the pandemic.
“We don’t want to discourage you from taking a summer job; we just want to give you some insight on how to do that safely, and what types of scams are floating around this year,” she said.
People can start by looking for red flags in job postings and interactions prior to hiring.
If the employer asks for payment in advance, for example for an application fee, training or office supplies, this is something to take into account.
“Anyone who needs this financial and personal information up front should sound the alarm and do some additional research on that company,” Waters said.
Likewise, if someone is willing to offer a job without an interview, it’s a suspicious sign.
“The bottom line is you have to at least have a phone interview,” Waters said. “Best case: an in-person interview, then a Zoom interview, and then (at least) a phone interview.”
Never take a job where the only interaction is via text or email, as there is likely a scammer on the other end.
Scammers are also using AI to their advantage, creating fake web pages that closely resemble legitimate businesses.
To make sure a business page is real, first visit the BBB homepage.
“That’s a safe navigation portal. We’ve vetted those websites. You can look and know that you’re going to call safe numbers and use safe websites,” Waters said.
While people often assume that scams only target older generations, a new type of scam is targeting the 18 to 24 age group.
Package fraud involves little work for high pay, performing tasks such as stuffing envelopes, checking inventory and reshipping items.
“They will hire you without much interaction, a very small job with a high salary, and you will do things like checking boxes to make sure nothing is broken and resending these packages to other addresses, she said.
It’s another example of something that’s too good to be true.
“You do this job, give these people your financial information to get paid, and when payday comes, they completely disappear,” Waters said. “You are not getting paid for the work, and you actually assisted in a two-part scam to get stolen goods to another address.”
Several people have already reported package fraud to the BBB this year.
When it comes to preventing workplace scams of any kind, Waters recommends taking the following steps before signing anything or providing any personal information:
- Talk to people who already work at the company
- Contact the manager or other company official
- Make sure you have an employment contract
- Ask for details about the job, duration, pay cycle, etc.
